Thanks for info about perfumed winter plants. I'm now drooling over catalogues again for osmanthus, daphne, and mahonia. Has anyone got sarcocca [sweet box], and I also fancy tree paeonies, has anyone got experience of them, please? ;)

I got one about three years ago - lovely plant, but needs support in the wet - like all peonies [IMG]

Isn't winter about drooling over what could be next year - (also browsing the catalogues).

Got a few tree peonies, very expensive but beautiful. (The basic red or yellow ones are not too bad and both dead easy from seed). They are very hardy and fairly easy to grow. They are a bit boring out of flower and the flowering season is very short though.

When I first started gardening I joined the local horticultural club although I hadn't much idea about plants just blind enthusiasm. Most of the members were much older than me and happy to share their knowledge and their plants. Lots of freebies which I planted and let them take their chances. It gave me a good start until experience and better fortune took over and I became more choosy about my garden and what I wanted in it. My biggest piece of advice to any novice gardener is to join a garden/horticultural club - gardeners are lovely and full of helpful advice.
