garlic can be used to fight mosquitoes

Since mosquitoes are soft-bodied insects the garlic juice can be very toxic to them in increased concentrations. The juice does not harm humans or pets or plants, but to mosquitoes it can be deadly. The odor of it chases them out of the area and they stay away - for as long as they can detect the odor. While the odor of sprayed garlic juice becomes undetectable to humans within minutes, the mosquitoes will still detect it. Mosquitoes have extremely sensitive odor sensing antennae - as high as 10,000 times better than humans. They can detect the garlic extract for much longer periods of time and will stay away from the sprayed area for up to a month and more.

Me too Gogs - two dreadful bites on my ankle that burned so much they kept me
awake for a couple of nights.
I have never in my life had a gnat bite, wasp or bee sting until a week ago.
Are they a different type? Just wondered why they have not attacked me until now
Very handy to know about garlic mf.

Unlike me, jjordie, that you can be guaranteed that if there is only one around, it will bite me!
I want to stay away from insects as much as possible. My mother had a couple of severe allergic reactions already...(from wasps bite, though)

    to explain what I mean...

    Severe Allergic Reaction Overview

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that occurs rapidly and causes a lifeââ?¬â??threatening response involving the whole body. This reaction can lead to difficulty breathing and shock ultimately leading to death.

For an anaphylactic reaction to occur, you must have been exposed in the past to the substance that causes the reaction, called the antigen. This is called "sensitization."

A bee sting, for example, may not cause an allergic reaction the first time.

Another bee sting may produce a sudden, severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock.
These reactions usually occur within seconds to minutes of exposure. Occasionally, they are delayed.
You may develop sensitivity and anaphylaxis to a substance that you have been exposed to many times in the past without a reaction, and often people don't recall the previous exposure.

Hi jj. If you're talking about being bitten by mozzies' in the Med. area, yes, they are a different type. The're smaller than ours with "stocky" bodies and the wings stick out from the side when they're at rest. They look a bit like a very small "hover-fly" My MBH suffered terribly from them, one year. Now 6 weeks before we go away we take Brewe'rs Yeast supplements. ( 6 a day) It does work. I take garlic supplements all the time and that, by itself, doesn't seem very effective. Hope this helps. I hate Mozzies with a passion.
I have had the most terrible bites over the passed years on holiday.
It always amazed me how they pick you out.
Some people always get bitten more than others,
After doing a bit of research I found it was probably down to the odour we give off.
    Gosh I must stink :D

Lyn, eat Marmite and it will help keep them away. Put it on you instead of suntan lotion and it will definitely keep them away [IMG] :D . Apparently they can smell us from 5 miles away.

    Thanks, walnut. Interesting article.
The Brewer's Yeast/ Marmite seems effective for us so we'll keep using that. Apparently it's something to do with Vit. B changing the body odour.

The mozzies are living in my summer house and I hate to sit in there at the moment. We've tried citronella in there but didn't do much, may try the garlic method this afternoon. We've been unable to have windows and doors open recently as the house kept filling up with them but they are very slow and easy to kill so obviously not their ideal climate or surroundings.
