Sure that this an old favourite, but my lawn is being overrun with lovely green moss. A gardening neigbour warns me about using moss killer, but my physical condition does not allow for raking out.

The usual causes of moss in lawns are, poor drainage, heavy shade and cutting too close. The drainage and cutting height can be easily addressed, the shade is of course more of a problem. Its a bit late in the season for lawn treatment, but in spring you should aerate the lawn then use a proprietry brand of "weed-feed-moss killer". Used exactly as recommended you should have no problems. The dead, blackened moss will need to be raked out, but you should be able to hire (or perhaps borrow) an electric scarifier. (Be sure to wait until the moss has blackened and died before raking out) When you cut the lawn don't cut too close and the lawn should soon recover

get a free quote from Greenthumb (they are pretty cheap)

some guys use liquid moss killer in winter .... your lawn may need aerating/scarifying, or your soil may be acidic, or you have too much shade

greenthumb will advise what needs doing, and if your garden has too much shade, you can overseed in spring with a grass seed that does well in shade
