    Hi everyone,
I have just moved into my new home and the back lawn has quite a bit of moss on it. Is it easy to remove or will I have to reseed it from scratch? The garden seems to have been neglected over the past few years.

Use a feed, weed and mosskiller then two weeks later rake out all the dead (black) moss. Then top dress with a sharp sand/compost/seed mixture. It is possible to bring a lawn back to life though it will take time. You may have to repeat this a few times to get rid of most of the moss.

I agree with Neil - it's definitely worth trying to renovate a neglected lawn but it will take some time.

Most lawns have at least a bit of moss in them but can you see any specific problems? For example, if there's a lot of overhang from neglected trees, it'd be worth cutting them back.

Also, push your garden fork deep into the worst areas of moss to see if the ground is compacted or hiding the usual horrors of builder's rubbish and old bricks. If so, dig them out and aerate the patch with your fork.

My advice is as above, but use a liquid "three in one" (Wilco's sell it).

I've never yet been able to use the granular type without scorching the lawn in a few places.

My front lawn was covered in moss.
    I used a weed/feed moss killer. 3 in1 feeds.
Makes the lawn go black and a nice seeweed smell. (My son thought he was at the beach)
Anyway, raked out the dead weeds/moss. Then threw down grass seed, trampled it in using my heels. Watered VERY well. Grass started appearing within a week. The moss started coming back. Scarify before the winter, scarify in the spring, spike your lawn to let air in.
I also used Sulphate Amonia as a liquid feed.
End result, LUSH GREEN GRASS. No moss, no weeds.

You've lost me here, you said the moss came back, and then NO moss.

How did you achieve this bit?

Scotts lawn builder with moss control is great. Rake out the black moss with a metal rake and over seed. Don't expect miracles now. growing period is coming to an end but prepare for next spring.

Don't let dead leaves sit on the lawn through autumn and winter this will cause moss as the ground won't get any sun with damp leaves on it.

Good luck mate. I know your pain I've been battling with mine for years but got the hang of it now. I hope. lol
