We visited the National Collection of old-fashioned roses at Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire yesterday. http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-vh/w-visits/w-findaplace/w-mottisfont.htm

The gardens are just stunning right now, most of the old-fashioned roses are in bloom. The scents and sights are wonderful. I don't know much about roses, I just know now that I've got to try one or two. There were so many to choose from but this was my favourite, its fragrance was like Sherbet Lemon sweets (its called Prollifera De Redoute):

Below is their Rose of the Week, called Lykkefund (Lucky Find), a Danish variety found by chance in 1930 , its a thornless variety and this specimen is massive:

Its not just roses there are lots of clematis, aqualiga etc etc:

It was very busy there, but the gardens are big so it didn't seem too bad, its certainly worth a visit if you love roses. :gnthb:

Hi Woo, we went through Romsey on the way there, thats really close by. There was another garden nearby that we noticed, Hillier Gardens, which I've heard of but never been to. Its within striking distance of us so we will have to visit them as well sometime.

Thanks capney, there are some real showy coloured roses as well, I liked Prollifera De Redoute for its more subtle colouring. Some of the others knock your socks off.

    Hi JWK

Great pictures of Mottisfont. I hope you also took a stroll along the banks of the Test because it's a wonderfully relaxing place to be on a hot day.

I live near the Hillier Gardens and can confirm they're well worth a visit. They're surprisingly big and very well stocked and run. There's also an excellent education centre, cafe and masses of car parking. And of course, there's also a Hilliers Garden Centre in the grounds so that you can empty your wallet on beautiful plants to take home while you're in the mood!

Hillier gardens is on our list now, thanks Flinty.

We didn't have time to follow the walk along the Test, it did look inviting though, the waters are crystal clear with some pretty large trout. We never went around the house itself either. We will have to go back and spend more time there.
