Have now just cut my rhodendrum right down as diseased, am quite gutted as was 6ft tall but seriously black leaved and diseased - not 1 healthy leaf or bud among it. I have turned the soil and added compost etc and wonder as the bed is now looking rather empty whether I should move a Eucalptus there which I planted in another bed 1 year ago and is growind rapidly too big for the bed it is in now. Any advice would be appreciated!!

Probably would have been better if you had removed the soil from the diseased rhody but I would think it will be ok to put the eucalyptus there. As big a root ball as possible and water in well

I had a pretty large Eucalptus which was at least 12 ft high. It was in the way and needed to be shifted or be cut down. A JCB working here moved it and plonked it unceremoniously into a hole the machine had dug...no fancy care or treatment what so ever. This was in about May time (Scotland) tho. It has never looked back, has grown to about 35 ft in 4 years and been hacked back twice because it is below the telephone line!I wouldn't think you'd have any trouble moving yours...seem as tough as old boots altho cold can be their enemy. How on earth mine has survived 2 hellish winters with temperatures of minus 17 degrees who only knows but it has. Just be aware tht once they get going they really do and are BIG trees. Good luck.

I have read "learned advice" that Eucalyptus should be planted as very small plants, and allowed to establish "in situ" - even in preference to buying a decent-sized-pot-grown plant.

But if there is another plant somewhere else that needs moving anyway then there isn't much to loose :)
