Having decided to rearrange an area of garden there are a couple of paeonies that will need moving. Any advice beyond wait until they die down in the autumn, move with as large a rootball as possible and forget the flowers for a year or so,

Hi Nigel, if you're not in a hurry I would leave the Peonies until September or October. You could divide them then as well giving you some more clumps of a great plant. There is a myth that they, particularly, hate being moved. But my wife moved our Peonies around so much I remarked that they needed suitcases because of the times they were moved:heehee: But no plant likes being moved whatever the time of year and will "sulk" until it recovers and Peonies are no different. It probably won't flower well for the first year but after that it will increase the flowering. One point, which I'm sure you're aware of, is to water the plant well during the first fortnight to ensure it doesn't get a set back due to lack of common sense care. Oh, and take a note of the present level of soil where they are planted and plant them again to the same level.:coffee::snork:

Not been my experience :) Most common mistake with herbaceous paeonies is planting them too deep. I plant with the tubers pretty much "on" the surface. They may not look great in the first year, but as @ARMANDII said that's true of most things after moving / dividing.
