    Hi hope everyone is good.

I have a flower bed that I want to move and restart completely. There are some shrubs and perennials that I would like to move to another area.
I know it's far from the ideal time to move these but I want to get it done over the next weekend.
Has anybody any hints on how to make it as stress free as possible on the plants as they are a decent size and it would be a shame to lose them.
The plants I have to move are

    Dahlias.
Just coming into flower. They have been left in the ground for years.

    Oriental poppies.
I have just cut these back

    A hebe.

    A large heather

    Oriental lillies.
    Just finishing flowering

    A small rose

    Sedum spectabile

    A Rosemary

    A lot of daffodil bulbs

And a few other small shrubs that I have no idea of names.

Do any of them have a chance and what can I do to give them the best chance. The weather is wet and cool here (typical Irish summer)

    Thanks for any help.

Count on losing a few of those as they won't like being moved whilst in full growth. Obviously it helps being very wet at the moment and you'll have to keep them well watered after moving for the rest of the summer. Try and get as big a rootball as possible.

If all the above have to be moved now I would recommend that you prune everything down to the bare minimum except the Heather as Heathers don't tend to respond to serious haircuts. You could prune off the old flowers and a bit more stem below where the flowers have been (about a couple of inches or so). You obviously will loose this seasons flowers on the shrubs/ summer flowering plants but by being severe you shouldn't loose the plants and they should recover. Keep watered as JWK has already said and also mist any remaining top growth as the plants are more likely to die from a combination of root disturbance = lack of ability to take up water and transpiration through their leaves, hence why you should reduce the top growth as much as possible to minimize the amount of moisture the plants loose. I do move Dahlias when they have a fair amount of top growth BUT I mist them every 4 to 5 hours every day for about a week post moving otherwise they wouldn't survive the move. Funny how when I move them it never flaming rains to help the move. Once re-established it never stops:)

Cheers JWK and silu. I'll have a go this weekend. Unfortunately they will have to be moved. Either this weekend or next. There is a half tonne of gravel left from a path and that's the spot earmarked for it.
          Thanx for the advice.

Poppies and daffodils have the best chance. The others...well...I wouldn't risk it but if you have to dig up the biggest root ball you can, prune back, give it a lot of water daily if it doesn't rain and pray.

No fear of it not raining here. It's been bucketing down for weeks
