Might be guilty of being ultra cautious, but would appreciate guidance on a mulch suitable for Clematis. Mindful that they are lime hating, I would not wish contents to have been treated with any contentious ingredients.

I currently have 10 in my garden and would not wish to lose.

    Many Thanks.

Er, according to the people at Burford House clematis do not care whether the soil is lime or not (as long as it is not too chalky or too peaty). You may mulch with almost anything you can lay your hands on, though raw manure might be a bit strong!

I have heard it said that clematis like chalky soils, but this apparently goes back to when most were grafted onto the wild form of "old mans beard"
Thats not done anymore and they grow on their own roots, and I dont think (as Palustris says) they are too particular.
Should add I dont grow very many myself. [IMG]

Had another look and both Evison and Lloyd agree, they are not lime hating. We grow over 100 of them by the way.

I've had clematis doing very well in the Hemel area, and the lime-scale there is incredible - so, no probs there - fully agree.

Now the subject of clematis, I may be a bit perverse, I have clematis "Prince of wales" next to clematis "Lady Di" - well perhaps the only time they both lay in the same bed together!!!!!

well they are both on lime (I have about 12 other clematis too) Wales, is great but a little dull, Di - she is ever so pretty but wilts.

Not sure what morral of story is.

    Hi there,

Thanks and happy to be guided by the consensus although grateful to Pete2255 for confirming that there was some substance, albeit outdated,
    to my incorrect assertion.

    Many Thanks.
