Sorry if this is the wrong section for this post.

I am trying to find a good (fairly cheap) mulching agent, as I landscaped the garden last year and we haven't filled in all the gaps in the beds yet (you can imagine the amount of weeding I have done this year!). I have clay soil, so I'm looking for something which will help break this down.

I have been advised by a gardening friend that the best thing to go for it the small bark chippings (I think they are called landscaping ones) rather then the big ones which all garden centres sell. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks.

    Hi Stroudy,

Clay soil has a few different remedies, each of which vary in efficiency. I tend to dig it over roughly for when it freezes, and when I turn it again in spring well rotted manure goes in with it. Bark chippings are an option as a mulch, but they won`t solve the clay issue.

And don`t do what I did-add sand-it just makes the soil worse.

Try and contact a sawmills for the bark chips, cheaper than a garden centre. different places call the grades of bark differnt things....
