Any idea if these are the kind one can eat please? They are growing under my cauliflower. Also, please know that I am just curious. I would not hold anyone responsible for any outcome if I was silly enough to try one!

You sometimes sound like a person who has a death wish or is at least an adrenaline junkie. Lori!

I believe that to identify definitively experts need to see the gill patterns and whether there is a little collar on the stem. And apparently some really deadly ones look like common mushrooms. Please don't try them!

I've been out 'fungi foraging' locally with John Wright, the guy who does those expensive River Cottage courses in Dorset, but one held here locally by a restaurateur where my daughter was working at the time and you need to be able to indentify the fatal ones before eating the more obscure ones.

Also know a (fairly) local expert who's dismissive of amateurs wandering around his local woodlands (woodlands/close to trees tend to be where most of the fatal ones grow), asking others whether stuff is edible.

Oh well, I'm always looking out for things that are useful and free. I bet @Scrungee would agree ;)

Got a friend at the pub who picks mushrooms in the wild so I'll take one to him and get his opinion. He doesn't have to share what he finds because his wife will only eat shitake mushrooms :)

Note: my post must have crossed with @Scrungee as I didn't see it when I hit the reply button. My apologies!
