    Hi,

I bought one of those mushroom growing kits from local garden centre a few weeks ago, I look at it and spray it every couple of days, the day before last i looked and there was only one big mushroom and a couple of tiny ones.

Yesterday I took the lid off and got a huge shock, 3 of the little ones had grown to MASSIVE proportions literally over night! Well impressed!

Going to make a mushroom risotto with them tomorrow after work. Looking forward to it! Yum!

is it true you can grow mushrooms indoors? can you do it cheaply and without it being really energy intensive?

    hi David,

I paid £6.99 for my mushroom kit, comes in a box with everything you need. Basically you just put it in the box following the instructions. Spray it with a plant sprayer to keep it moist and keep it in a dark cool place with the lid off.

I dont have a dark cool place so I jsut keep it in the dining room with the lid on and poked some holes in the lid, seems to be working fine, had about 5 mushrooms so far. You can pick then so they're fresh whenever you want to use them or pick em and put them in the fridge ike shop bought ones.

When you think that you pay 70p to a pound for a box of about 10-12 mushrooms it'll not take long to recoup your initial outlay.

    K xx

I have grown mushrooms like that. The return over months is well worth the kit.

If you don't have somewhere dark. Then either in, a shed, a garage, a loo, or anywhere you have the space...they work great if put the bucket or bag in a cardboard box. When you have sprayed them, just fold down the flaps on the top of the box and cover with a folded black bin liner, just to keep the light out from the cracks.

Depends exactly what you mean Ivory. Generally here in England, if you purchase mushrooms from the supermarket, then they have usually been in transit from wherever to here.

If we purchase mushrooms from markets etc and they are reasonable fresh, then the taste from home grown is approx twice the taste than market bought one's.

One of the reasons of course, is that you pick them and eat them virtually straight away.

If you like mushrooms, then it is not going to cost you much to give them a try...but I can assure you, you wont be disappointed.:thumb:

I LOVE mushrooms. I am a hobbit. One of the things that I want to do soon is to learn mushroom picking: we are surrounded by woods here, so i could pick a lot in autumn (well even now actually... in Italy we only have m in autumn, bu here is different). Right now I don´t trust myself in telling the good from the bad. WHich is why I am very curious about these boxes.

Anyway I will have to have mushrooms risotto too this evening, now I have read this I just have to. (dried porcini is a standard "must have always" thing for hobbits)

the mushrooms are very tasty Ivory, had a couple on my bacon sandwich this morning, much better than the usual closed cup variety from tesco etc.

    Give it a try.

Maybe I'll black out the light from the holes and see how that goes.

My neighbour was a Tree Surgeon and worked for years with the Forestry Commission. He was one of those people who knew which mushrooms you could eat and which one's were poisonous. When it was the right time of the year, he would go out collecting them...and some were very tasty two.

When I grew the indoor one's I used to share them with him, as he loved them and they cropped much more than I could use....he thought they were really good and tasty..so there ya go.:thumb:

I wish you luck with your genning up on identification of edible one's but I would also suggest you don't do it just by the book...find someone who can advise you personally as well.

Just as an aside. Mrs Tweaky is so small, she had a job as a lumberjack in a mushroom forest!!!

Yes that is what I would like. Just too easy to get killed by your risotto because the pic in the book was not really the right shade of brown, lol.

I will definitely try one of the kits in the (not too distant) future. Thanks for the info!!
