I am looking for some advice on the 3 rose bushes that I have. All 3 are planted directly in the ground .

    The 3 are
    Crocus Rose
    Falstaff
    Charlotte

They were planted about a year ago and bought from David Austin. All 3 are highly scented and each had several good blooms last year. I am now looking for help on bringing them on more this year.

I will be pruning them next month and know about pruning methods and cutting just above an outward facing eye. My questions are...

Each bush produced flowers but the flowers were really big and the stems were barely strong enough to take the weight. Is this something that will improve over time?

They were all planted at the same time about 2 feet apart but the middle one (Falstaff) does not look as healthy as the other 2 although I did see some new shoots coming along and am certain it is not dead. Would I be right?

When pruning, how far down should I prune to? I think I would normally go to about 10 inches from the ground, is that right?

What is the best food? Horse manure diluted or undiluted, some other food like you can buy from a garden centre or is there something else that everyone swears by and would that get rid of any blackspot?

How tall should I let them grow to?

    Thanks

    Nigel

Hi @Nigalius The height of your roses is really your own personal preference but(English Roses)Charlotte Rose will be 3 to 5 ft so anywhere between the two

(English Rose)Falstaff Rose I am given to understand that you can either grow this as a shrub Rose or a climber 4 ft x 3.5 or 6 ft-8 ft as a climber

(English Rose)Crocus Rose will grow to 4 ft x 3 ft

The general rule is to plant your Roses 30 -36 inches apart,so that they can get good air circulation round them and that the canes don't criss cross and cause damage to each other.

English Roses and other repeat flowering shrub roses should be cut down by between 1/3 and 2/3 but only thinned a little.

IMHO Personally I would move the Falstaff Rose if possible while its in its dormant state the way you are saying it doesn't look as healthy is telling me its not happy there.

Nothing will get rid of Blackspot once the Roses are infected, you can only try and prevent it.

Feeding Roses is also a personal choice for each of us and everything depends on what soil you have, the position and the .type of Rose

This is only my personal opinion and I am sure that our other Rosarians will be along to advise you, hope this helps:smile:
