Sorry - I missed this first time round cumbs!

I live about 10 miles outside Plymouth, on the southernmost margin of Dartmoor in a town called Ivybridge.

Thanks for your nice comments about my garden - they were all taken a year ago and it really is a messy wildlife garden now as I did next to nothing to it last year for various reasons.

You have very pretty flowers in your garden - I have a bleeding heart too - they are lovely this time of year :)

In Carlisle, are you close enough to benefit from the Gulf Stream I wonder? It looks like you have an exotic palmy looking jobby in your first picture - what climate do you have wayyyyyy up north there!?

carlisle does usually get mild weather from the gulf stream yes
and is approximately only 80ft above sea level, the surrounding mountains on 3 sides (lake district, northern pennines and southern uplands protect carlilse from the winter snows, so usually when the hills are getting battered with snow, carlisle usually (not always) escapes the snowfall

temperatures are alot cooler than sunny devon and we do get quite a bit of rainfall but cordylines (torbay palm) and date palms thrive up here and can grow to the same height as their devon counterparts.

yes the bleeding hearts are lovely and the alliums are just starting to bloom

in spring i notice that the daffodils flower earlier in carlisle than 60 miles eastwards in newcastle they can be in bloom here and not quite full height and upright over there (carlisle & newcastle are roughly the same latitude)

i think the north east gets slightly worse weather than us, but both of us shiver compared to lovely devon

there is a botanical garden in south west scotland called logan gardens and they have a large array of exotics that can survive thanks to the gulf stream
