Anyone remember my ageing sperengeri I posted on here a couple of time? Probably not, it has been a while. Well, this was it ...

and I have repotted it on a twice yearly basis. strictly according to the advice of a guru from Am Gardening which was to reduce the root ball by ruthlessly pulling off all the old roots and the many little 'potatoes' these things grow.

Well, earlier this year this happened

and since the pot was already a pretty big one, about 18" diameter at the top, I decided that I really needed to be ruthless this time.

So, I took the mantle off - two bin bags full! - and decanted it on the garden table. I worked at it and snipped at it and managed to get it down to about 60% but still wasn't satisfied.

So.... I got out my regular saw and began hacking lumps off the rootball! I chopped and sawed until it was another 50% smaller and then ... (doh!) I sawed about 1½" off the top because it was all full of cut off stems and sooo spikey and ugly.

The I replanted it and sat back to watch it grow again!

    And I waited

    and waited

    and waited ...

    nothing. [IMG]

I eventually had to accept that I'd KILLED the poor thing.

44 years we had it. 44! I was broken hearted. How could I have been so stupid?

But then - hallelujah! - I went outside today and found - a frond! It's growing again! Just one single frond. Oh the joy, the ineffable delight! My old friend will once again be in my conservatory to drop needles all over the carpet .....

hang on - needles all over the carpet - now I remember, the wretched thing was like having a perpetual Christmas tree.

    Doh!

    AM I MAD!
