At long last my tomatoes have ripened:

Had the first two for lunch today along with fresh spinach and rocket and mangetout (which is starting to be more mange than tout), I'd forgotten how nice home grown tomatoes taste. It's a variety called New Girl.

    Yum!

    :hehe: @ ziggy.

Yum yum. I have my first ripe one too. Its a Tumbling Tom from a hanging basket, but I have a Tigerella, Alicante, Gardeners Delight and Sweet Million in the greenhouse. Plenty of fruit but still green.

    Glad you enjoyed JWK :)
(Im having baby broad beans, a few mangetout and a couple of wee courgettes with some salmon for my tea)

Greenhouse or window sill is better. There are outdoor varieties but you run the risk of bad summer, blight etc. I'm growing a greenhouse variety outdoors this year on account of not having a greenhouse but also betting myself that this summer will be good on account of the last few being ****.

Didn't think that last word would get past the auto censor but you get the idea.

    Thanks guys.

Ziggy, I tried outdoor tomatoes for the first time last year and convinced myself they tasted a lot better than my greenhouse ones. So this year I'm growing more outdoors, they are much later than my greenhouse plants, probably won't get any fruit until August. I know others on here have also said the outdoor grown plants are nicer.

Interesting JWK, wonder if thats because they ripen at a slower rate

    Enjoy your tomatoes JWK.
I won't have any for another few weeks.
I grow mine outdoors up against a south facing wall and they get on fine.
Last year I had tomatoes ripe in June but started a bit later this year as the spring was so cold but by the end of July they'll be ready.
Varieties which do well outdoors for me are
Tigerella, Red Cherry, Ilde and the bush tomatoes.

I have 5 tom plants in total, 4 are the same variety. Of these 2 are in a growhouse, planted in a growbag with 9CM pots on top (easier for watering and keeping them upright). I have noticed massive differences in growth rate though. The growbag/growhouse are already about 18" - 2' tall whereas the ones planted straight into the soil are barely 3" tall. So I am assuming that you are taking better care of your outdoor ones Alice as mine just don't seem to want to grow! The fifth which is a yellow variety has it's first toms on now, I have little green balls on there as well!

I've been away on holiday for a few days, and all my outdoor tomato plants have grown like crazy, the fruit are getting to be full sized, it will still be August before they ripen I think.
