I just thought I'd share my little plot. After buying our first house last May, I couldn't wait to improve the overlooked, concrete jungle that we inherited. Unfortunately the indoor renovation took priority and we only managed to get going with outside this autumn. Our goal was to create a more lush view from the kitchen and to add privacy, as well as a safe area for our dog.

The yard was on three different levels with a painted breeze block divide (not a good look.) I optimistically removed all the slabs and hoped to find good, fertile soil. What I found was a concrete/tarmac layer that had to be manually chipped away at a tediously slow rate.

The next job was to create the raised railway sleeper bed for the black bamboo and eucalyptus that I'd collected (eucalyptus was free online and the bamboo were all BOGOF).A new fence went in between us and the neighbours. The old one had a gate between us and next door (see picture 3).We're friendly but not THAT friendly with them!

Two large skips later and the land was level. The rest was much more enjoyable- laying the circular lawn and planting the beds as well as laying the gravel. It's amazing how we have filled the garden on a shoestring- most plants have been reduced, grown from cuttings or given from friends with the odd full priced treat. There are still lots of jobs to do, but I'm pleased with what we've achieved before it gets too cold to be outside.

Thank you! It isn't a very big space and I'm already dreaming of our next house where the garden will take priority, but at least it's a little bit of greenery in the meantime!

Welcome to GC Darkest minnow. :) You've made a great job of the garden and the raised bed has created some lovely and needed screening for you. :dbgrtmb:

Thank you for the welcome, Sheal. The raised bed has made a huge difference on privacy levels and, as painful as it was to do, levelling the garden has meant we're lower down too, which adds even more privacy. I plan to put a trellis along the top of the wall in the spring. The bamboo need tying back and I've got lots of climbers coming on too!

I really love what you have created! The circle of grass adds a much needed splash of green. I can't wait to see it in summer when the beds are in full flower :)

Thanks, Jack! I'm pleased I managed to get a bit of lawn in there for the green factor. I've tried or plant a mix of evergreens for winter interest and perennials for colour in the spring/summer. Just hoping they all survive the winter, I felt like I was leaving all the planting late in the year. Your own garden is really lovely too!
