They are our friends :) Think that's a Garden Spider (Araneus diadematus). I found this Orb Spider a couple of days ago in my greenhouse:

They are coming to an end now, but they seem to always appear as the autumn approaches.
Not sure if they mostly die.

I don't like those big black ones that run across the floor when you don't expect it.

@JWK had a read earlier about the Orb spider, they can but are reluctant to bite, their bite is equivalent to a bee sting. It can cause dizziness and sickness, be careful when handling them John :yikes:

The large female in @JWK 's pics will die soon after she has secured her egg sack somewhere. The young (spiderlings) will hatch out in the Spring but won't get noticed until about August as they are so small.

We have loads of spiders in the house and Mrs Shiney puts them very carefully outside if there are too many about. As you obviously don't like spiders I won't put the photo here of Mrs Shiney holding a Tarantula when we were travelling in the Amazon. :) It was the pet spider of one of the kids in the village we were in :rolleyespink:

I used to keep Red Legged Tarantulas and various spiders many decades ago along with Pythons and Geckos and Treefrogs, that was before I got married!!!!
As @shiney won't show you one here is a 'cute cuddly' Tarantula, I almost bought it! (Caesars Palace Las Vegas).

I had a feeling something like that went on with these kinds of spider, very short lived but certainly make their presence felt on autumn mornings.

Brilliant fairplay  @strongylodon , now snakes I don’t mind, but spiders and rats make me scream like a girl :roflol:
Behind my house there’s a common with a brook running between common and my garden, so it’s not unusual for me to shoot a rat now and again, used to bait them, until one dark night , out the garden in my slippers and a rat run across my foot, scream wasn’t the word :roflol::roflol:
