The black lab is called Bella and was rescued by us she was very badly treated. She was very scared of all men but now is a lovely dog although slightly insane lol we have had her 6 years. The choc lab is Lucy we rescued her from a puppy farm age 3 months. She was very unwell and cost hundreds of pounds in vet bills.Lucy is an absolute sweetheart a very loving lab who just wants cuddles all the time.Bella is now just over 7 and Lucy is just over 8.
Oh they are both beautiful and adorable girls!! :doggiesmz: Good on you, for giving them such a good, fit and healthy life; and thank you for sharing
Absolutely lovely dogs ! Its a shame when dogs are mistreated, but its so reqarding when you know youve given them the best home they will ever need! We need more people like yourself in the world, and save all these poor dogs getting treated bad. I recently rescued a Lurcher x and she is the most gentle creature, always looking after the kitten, but she was once abused and doesnt like men, how did you get past that?
great dogs, it's lovely what you have done in turning their lives around and giving them such a caring home
Thanks mum.I have had Labradors for over 40 years I love their gentle nature. Thanks Jessss. My mum was an RSPCA volunteer for many years sadly she is no longer alive. When I was growing up we always had lots of rescued or fostered animals some of them were treated horrifically.I remember a German Shepard we rescued called Shane his muzzle had been bound to stop him barking. He had large scars all round his mouth and his teeth were completely ground down. He was a fantastic dog very gentle and playful despite the way he had been treated. Bella was petrified of men and had nipped men through fear.I had been told by the charity who were fostering her that she could not be re-homed. I said I would try and adopt her. When we walked in the house where she was being fostered I told my daughter and wife to ignore Bella. We just sat down she was barking like mad.I let my hand hang down and after a minute felt a wet nose sniffing my hand.I never moved she then sat beside me and I gently stroked her ear.Within a few minutes I had her upside down having her belly rubbed. The lady fostering her just sat with her mouth open she said she had never seen Bella react that way to a man.A week later she was ours. This is what I did . I found the best way to train her to stop her fear of men is a reward of food.Let her come to the man in her own time and once she has gained confidence let them feed her.Obviously its simply a trust issue try to get her to meet men in her own environment where she feels safe. Make sure she has a clear exit escape route so she can retreat if she feels the need. I would start with someone you trust who has an understanding of dogs in a seated position and let your girl approach them in her own time. You may well find she might associate abuse with a hat or beard even certain clothes and may react. It takes time and Bella still reacts to men she has not met before but within a short time she is bugging them for a stroke.I wish you the best of luck. Thanks Penny.I love the black and white photos as well.I have just bought a new camera so will be taking some more photos and will post them. Thanks jared lecouteur I get rewards every day with big cuddles and two Labradors wagging their tails like mad. They are inseparable I love the way one comes in from the garden and the other wags their tail when they see their friend.
Thanks DavetheRave for the great advice, i will try introducing a man to the house, so far ive only let them in the garden , as i didn't want the dog to fee uncomfortable in her own house. But thank you !
Aaaaw great photos dave, its lovely that they both have such a loving home now, can't understand how anyone can ill treat their animals such beautiful dogs, we had a chocolate lab too called 'Fudge' such a lovely boy, so gentle, wouldn't hurt a fly.
