See what you think of this. I haven't sent it yet. Its for the steelworks that I think are still having a few teething troubles since reopening recently.

Perfect. Do you think that it would be a good idea to finish up with something a little more direct like, "I'd be grateful if you could let me know what steps are being taken to address this issue " to make it clear that they should come up with some sort of reply?

Excellent. I struggled with the ending. I'll go with what you said:)

Best of luck with it - let us know what they say.

I bet they'll say something like:

"Thank you for your recent enquiry. SSI takes its responsibilities very seriously, and works closely with the environment agency, local authorities and independent agencies to ensure that the plant is run in compliance with all EC and EU regulations, and indeed independent monitoring shows that we exceed the requirements set out in legislation. Of course we always appreciate the assistance and cooperation of local residents, and your concerns have been expressed to the local management team who will record your complaint".

I could be wrong, but I bet its along those lines:)

Still, if you don't tell them, they might not realise there's a problem. They had an accident there on sunday morning, with a small explosion followed by a fire requiring 50 fire fighters to attend. Nobody was hurt luckily, and the fire was quickly brought under control. I just hope they're taking it all seriously. Its a whopping big furnace here, I think its one of the biggest blast furnaces in the world, so I do hope they're not cutting corners.

I think what you are going to say is just right for stage one. You then wait to see what their response is as there are many ways of dealing with responses depending on how ambiguous they're trying to be.

Let's hope they agree there might be a problem and will investigate it.

After you finish on the word "addressed." you could finish : "Perhaps you will kindly confirm this is so."

That should be sufficient to get a reply but as others have said it is likely to be along the lines quoted.

          I'm now shocked.

I got a personal response that doesn't appear to have been standard issue from the PR department.

          This is what they said.

So the plot thickens. I'm inclined to believe them because there are other activities afoot in the vicinity. I bet its something to do with the new wind farm. The underground cables for which run just along the edge of the steel works. I bet something has been disturbed by that activity.

I know, I was surprised at the speed of the response. Fair play to them. I'd still be worried if I was them. Not good to have a gas leak so close to a blast furnace I think.

I'm sure they are correct that it isn't to do with them as you wouldn't have got a quick and categorical response otherwise. I guess a quick phonecall to the council will be able to confirm it. The local paper may be interested - and that usually gets a quicker fix to the problem.

I remember seeing them producing the second episode of The Quatermass Experiment at 'Ally Pally'. My friend's uncle was working on the lighting on the set.

Was that the one with the ammonia atmosphere?

I really can't remember because I remember more about the loads of cameras that seemed to be taking pictures at different angles throughout the production.
