I soon discovered the weld on the hex and the rod were hindering the bearings from performing properly, so soon after I bought another set of rods and this time I had the hex drilled and held to the trapezoid rod with slot springs, these pins were 2mm diameter, I must mention, at this time (pre 2023) I didn’t have a drill press or a welder so these jobs got done at a local engineering firm

Much better for the bearings now

    The slot pins got trimmed

After some time I started using my impact driver to lift and lower the scissor jack,

eventually one rod at the point of the slot spring gave way and split, the rod now was no longer fix in the hex firmly, the rod could now be pulled out from the hex with ease, not safe at all

This made my mind up that I needed thicker trapezoid rods

    I took both jack apart

Here the split on the rod can be seen

The new 16mm trapezoid rod and the new 16mm trapezoid nuts, the rod came in 1M length as I needed 2x 500mm this was just right as I would just cut it in half

New 16mm drill bit for the job

Cut the rod in to two, and had the cut edge chamfered

Widening the 12mm hole to 16mm on the bar

The rod slides through the hole with ease

A bit difficult with camera in one hand and controlling the drill bit, when not filming the drill was lowered with more control and lifted often to remove the swarf and using more cutting oil

Preparing the trapezoid nut to be welded
