    Any idea what's happening here? Possibly coincidentally we opened another plum that had a tiny little red maggot type thing in it.

    One of the many 'spot' type things which affect every type of fruit.
    The maggot would be from Plum moth. Not the easiest of things to keep away from the trees without spraying at the correct time, as indicated by the number of male moths caught in a Pheromone trap.
    Since we use the fruit for jam making we don't bother, just remove the maggots when we remove the stone.

      Tell him to quickly get his plums on embarrassing foliage on channel 4.
