I planted a tree (Victoria plum) last November which seems to be doing well, however... Some of the small young fruit has turned yellow and dropped off. Is this normal and natural thinning or is there a sinister reason for it? No sign of any infestations that I can see.

You're lucky! I planted two Victorias and only 1 single fruit has set!

It's a natural drop. Don't worry about it.
