I have a rhubarb plant. It has been pathetic the 3 years it has been in my garden. It would produce one stem and another wouldn't come till the first was on it's last legs!

So I went down the garden to the shed yesterday and was amazed to see Mr Rhubarb had become a huge mound of big green leaves!! I was thrilled to bits. Fresh Rube - right out of my own garden!

I pulled a few sticks, prepared them most lovingly and put them in a saucepan with a little water and some sugar and put it on the hob.

Sad thing was, I am in the habit of banging the ring on full for a few seconds until it gets warm. But once the pan was in place you kind of don't see it!

So I came through into the lounge and got onto the internet and shortly (sniff sniff) - wow somebody must be having a bonfire!

It was me! The pan had all but boiled dry and all my lovely rhubarb .....

    RUINED!!

along with a saucepan and (nearly) the ceramic hob!

    That'll larn me! [IMG]

That is so easily done - I burnt out a pressure cooker once and the whole house stank of it for weeks.

On the subject of rhubarb we have an awesome plant that has thrived on a raised, stony bit of soil by the stable for the 20 years that we have lived here - it has never been watered or fed but produces wonderful rhubarb year after year. I'm wondering if it soaks up the nutrients from the stable.

That's the odd thing - the first year I fussed over it. Then the last two summers haven't been in the garden AT ALL because of a bad knee. Perhaps you are right!

I love rhubarb (particularly early forced rhubarb) Daisees. Very sad that your first effort went awry but now it has kicked in you will get loads of it in spring. And it freezes so well. Oh and it loves natural manure.

Cook it with strawberries and you won't need to add as much sugar.
