You get to it from the garden through this gate (which used to have a roof on it just so you could have your G & T out of the rain!)

this is the small wild area there is to work with - gunnera in top right hand corner.

    View from the road side

Its full of mainly ground elder, the willow has to stay to stop my garden being washed away - iris and warter blob things on the bank side and lonicera hedge on garden side (compost heaps behind)

    All ideas gratefully recieved.

Oh nad what were we saying about light and colour, the blue silver looks so strong from the road side.

this is the last developed area of the garden (till I find the next place!) Jazzid said he had some ideas about developing it, so decided to post to get some advice from you all.

The area does flood so hope my gunners survives.

    How lovely and tranquil Waco.

A green and very pleasant land...

Bit tricky cutting the conifer hedge from the river though. ;)

You are all really encouraging, but what am I going to do with it?

I just sprayed all the ground elder with round up this afternoon ready for wonderful planting ideas.

Roders its OK I have him well insured - cutting hedges over river with electric clippers! just wish they had planted yew and not Layland as I am getting electric clipper syndrome.

I don't know how cold it gets, but you could frighten the passing traffic with some huge aroids, though you'd have to lift them in the autumn.

It's difficult to get an idea of the size of th4e spot from the photos. We must all put our thinking caps on.

    How about:

    Japanese Painted Fern
    Golden Feverfew
    violas
hostas - golden or green and white

and then there's the astilbe - they would love that patch

I have a painted fern - got it this spring but it is going to be over crowded so could shift it.

I have loads of fever few - and one of the plants on my "must have" list is Rogersia podophylla - the black leaves would look great with fever few.

I have some black violas too, though not sure they are hard enough to compete in semi wild area but could give them a go.

Hostas I think will get slug eaten, but astilbes - I would love to have a go with really big ones - they grow wild further down stream so would fit in.

    thanks Fran
