My viburnum layered itself. Free plant!

I was just tidying up in the front garden and I noticed a baby viburnum growing six inches from it's parent. Wondering whether it was just some suckers, I noticed a weak stem from low down on the parent had bent down in to the ground and clearly it had 'layered itself'. You can see in the photos.. Mind you, it was hard to get out because the roots had intermingled with the parent, but here it is!

I hope I have enough left on there for a new plant. Going to try and pot it up over winter and see how we get on!

As a novice gardener, I'm really happy to see this in action - and completely accidental too! Possibly I stood on it a couple of years ago when I was paining the walls of the house!!

 

Yes, quite a lot of plants send out adventitious roots and clone themselves. Apple trees’ branches sometimes crack and fall to the ground without breaking completely and the part that touches the soil can sometimes create a “pup”, given time.

 

As said, it happens a lot if you are lucky. It would be easier to list the plants which don't do it rather than the ones that do. Part of what makes gardening so fascinating.

 

Our Viburnum became multi-trunked. We didn't know till we cut it down this year ...
