During a visit to Dorset last year, my friend and I bought a couple of plants from a table outside a village hall. Most were readily recognisable herbs but there were two pots of a plant that neither of us recognised. We bought them and determined to find out what the plants were. Sadly, I am still none the wiser!

The plant has flourished in a pot in my garden, it stayed small throughout summer but shot up in autumn. It smells wonderful and had small yellow/green flowers for a very brief period during the autumn.

I have attached a picture and would be so pleased to finally discover what it is. :yho:

I think it's Ruta graveolens, Common Rue. Very pretty and with an unusual smell but beware:old:, the sap is an irritant and can affect sensitve skin quite badly.

Thank you! The mystery is solved - although, having read a bit more a bit more about Common Rue following your posts, I am not too sure what to do with this plant in my garden! :cnfs:

It needs a sunny well drained site.. and as we've mentioned , it can cause an allergic reaction... so not somewhere people can brush past it.

It grows to about 2 ft at most!
