    Hiya

Just returned from a holiday on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria and would like some help id-ing these two (photos attached). One I call the 'broad bean tree', an acacia perhaps that I am not familiar with. The other has a spiny, pendulous, willowy appearance. The fruits become dark, the leaves are alternate and not very hairy.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

First one looks like russian Olive to me
    Elaeagnus Angustifolia.

The second looks very like honey locust,
    Gleditsia Triacanthos.

I'll argue with you, Pete.... But what's the good of it when we all know that you're right.:hehe: Actually, I was hoping that someone would identify these two trees. :thmb:

    hallo - karaman here,

there are a lot of those trees in bulgaria with the long bean-type fruit. Are they edible? - only i've seen something similar in germany sold in a greengrocer's so i bought some to try it but all i can remember is it was very hard and nearly broke my teeth. In hungary this edible variety is called st. john's bread. My guess is the bulgarian variety is not edible or in Bulgaria they would have been harvested as soon as....!

    anyone know any more?

 Wouldn't argue with you Pete... But................. What about the Anchovey Pear (Grias cauliflora), evergreen tree of the family Lecythidaceae, native to the West Indies originally. The tree is cultivated for its edible fruit. The plant grows to about 15 metres (50 feet) tall and bears spear-shaped, glossy leaves about 90 cm (35 inches) long that are produced in tufts at the ends of the branches. The fragrant yellow flowers are about 5 cm (2 inches) across. The fruit, which contains one seed, is pear-shaped, russet brown, 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) long, and rich in vitamin C.
    Just a thought....

Marley, I don't think a tree native to the Windies (tropical) would be able to grow in Bulgaria they have harsher winters than here and I think it would only survive here under glass. Just my thoughts.:)
