Good morning having researched this subject I'm not sure if Penny's nails need clipping it seems some do ,some don't, as she goes on lots of walks(Pavements and fields),any advice would be extremely helpful, thank you:smile:

    Good morning Woo:smile:

If Penny is still a fairly young dog and she like you say is doing plenty of pavement work then there should be no need to clip her claws as the walking on the hard surfaces will do the same job.If when she gets elderly and stops the hard surface walking, then she might need them trimming but you have to be careful that you don't cut into the vein that runs through each nail.If you can see through the nail and you can see the vein you can tell how far down to trim with clippers especially made for the task, but if the nails are dark you will have a bit of a task on your hands.

We didn't find the problem with our Tina until her Arthritis got so bad she couldn't walk far so we took her to the vets to have the nails clipped but they cut through the vein and there was blood everywhere. They used a Caustic stick to stop the bleeding but we were all so traumatised we never took her back there ever again to have it done and bought our own clippers, and just took the sharp pointed ends off:smile:

Good luck with whatever you decide to do:smile:

Sorry, I don't know anything about dogs nails but Mrs Shiney used to clip Oscar the cat's nails.

Although he was out and about all day the tips used to get quite long and start curling over. One of the early members on here (Cookie Monster) explained what to do at it was easy using the correct clippers. She clipped just the very tips and he was quite happy for her to do so. Cookie warned about going too deep, as Kandy has said.

I agree that you should leave them for now and, with the walking Penny does, she shouldn't really need it. Now, despite the amount of walking *you* do, I'm afraid you will have to clip your own.

          I've clipped babies/children's nails - easy.
I've clipped cats nails - that's easy (once you can get the cat to sit still)!
I've clipped hens - that wasn't quite as easy (same issue as with dogs, go too low and you hit a vein  found that out the hard way )

I have *not* clipped Ozzy but I do keep an eye on them. He has very dark nails so it's not a job I would rush in to do. Having said that, I did notice one of his nails on the rug when I was vacuuming one day, so not sure if they shed them (like cats?) or if he was a naughty boy and had been chewing his nails? Checked over his paws and all nails were present and correct, so I could only assume it was shed :noidea:

I sometimes clip Ambers because she does grow her nails. Sometimes I take her to the vets but if I can I will do them. She is not happy because once Steve did them and went too far on one nail and she refused after that but I have coaxed her back into letting me do them but I am really careful to take only the tip off.

I do Maya's regularly and she walks typically 1.5 to 2 hours a day granted not too much pavement walking as she like to chase cars (must be the Collie in her) It used to terrify me but now I just take a small amount off and can get it done in a few mins now with no trauma :)
