Anyone know why this year has been such a poor year for them? I thought it was just in my garden but it seems quite widespread that this is a particularly bad year for them.
    Cheers

That's a surprise to me Andrew because I've grown a few varieties and they have been really good especially "Banana Split" which has romped away.

Bought a couple of packets of Dayglo mix and they've done really well all year, too well infact so I had to cut them right back. It's all down to the weather I guess.

Last year and the year before my nasturtiums were rampant, the blessed things were everywhere but this year they've been very poor, maybe my local slugs have developed a taste for them

Mine have been absolutely awful this year, and I reckon that most of it is down to aphids; as a bit of an experiment, I sprayed one planter of them with provado and unsurprisingly it has done the best out of them all, the rest are almost dead now. I took a closer look at some of them last night, and they are infested with some sort of black fly or aphid which are crammed right up the stems from top to bottom. I have also noticed that any that escaped the aphid problem seem to have been devastated by caterpillars.

My nasturtiums too were awful, I thought it was perhaps because I bought the seeds on ebay!!

Mine have done miserably too. I always rave about nasturtiums because they're usually brilliant, but not this year.

I think its just purely down to the weather. Nasturtium is not fussy, but it does ask for two things. Warmth and availability of water. This year got off to a late start, which the nasturtiums wont have liked. Then once it did get started its been hot and dry.

I've seen loads of struggling nasturtiums all around, so its not down to bad seeds, local microclimates, care regimes or anything. The only thing in common is the weather that they'll have all had to endure.

I commented else where on the forum, that I have not bothered with 'stirtiums, this year. Glad I havn't with the amount of Cabbage White butterflies there has been.

Not sure what the problem has been, but whenever I have had them they always do well. :dunno:

im not sure what to say about mine tbh as mine both did & didn't do well :scratch:some put on a great show & are still going strong with next to no greenfly or caterpillar damage  whilst others were covered head to toe in black fly & munched to within' an inch of their life by caterpillars...i binned the ones that were struggling a week or so ago (i just couldn't look at those black aphids any longer :eeew:) its odd how some thrived but others didn't
