Nasty Telephone scam

Had two phone calls today. voice is computer generated and it says that we are being sued by the Inland Revenue. They want us to press a button to get more info. Needless to say the phone was put down quickly.
Could scare the living daylights out of some people though.

 

This sounds similar to a phone call my mom had last week.

I'll let you know the details tomorrow when I see her.

 

Should add that whoever it is does not seem to have heard of Number recognition as the call was shown as International, Not exactly where the Inland Revenue is based.
Did not actually pick the phone up just heard the message.

 

I usually pick up the phone and start out very nice, before giving them an ear full mostly unrepeatable.

Probably not the best approach it it does make me feel better

 

It depends on what mood i am in , most of the time i go along with them and waste there time, some times I'm very abrupt, but the other day i resorted to at one must have caught me in a bad mood .

 

I do exactly the same. Pretty sad state of affairs when you feel you don't want to answer your own phone. What horrifies me is that these scammers must have lots of success otherwise I presume they'd stop continually pestering us.The record here is 13 in 1 day and that is despite having the BT block on UK based calls. I even had some ghit who sounded Pakistani/Indian phone me at 7.45 am a couple of Saturdays ago. I answered the phone not believing it would be a scammer at that time...wrong. I kept him on the phone for ages showing huge feigned interest in what he wanted from me (some sort of computer scam thingie) while I made a cooked breakfast for the family. I don't think he liked the noise of the bacon and eggs frying as I dangled the phone over the frying pan.

 

Trouble with this one is that in replying, by pressing the button they wanted pressing, you are sent to a premium cost phone line, so your conversation ,no matter how satisfying, would cost a huge amount of money.
Police in this area are warning people about this particular scam.

 

We had a call and it came up international then i dailed 1471 and the number was a local one

 

Have no fear @Palustris I did no pressing of anything! I found many ways of keeping him listening to my fry up while never even being in the same room as my computer although he thought I was. 2 can play at being extremely annoying and economical with the truth. Just to make sure I have checked my current phone bill and there is nothing showing up that I have to pay for a call from Mumbai.

 

We have the same issue here. They claim the Canada Revenue Police (never heard of them having police) will arrest us if we don't call back the number the recording cites. The shame of it is that they do get victims because there are a lot of immigrants who don't know our system and are afraid of getting in trouble with the government. It all comes down to who is the most ignorant.

We get lots of calls telling us we need our air ducts cleaned. I don't say a word. Just hang up.
