Oh dear Colin that's really bad I have noticed the blooming stuff on the far side at the end of the allotment plots over here it's growing like wildfire the guys just don't seem to be able to get rid of the stuff, I don't think we have any though although that might just be wishful thinking!:(

Thank's for the tip Walnut I'll pass it on to the poor fellows that are suffering from this dreaded weed!Hel.xxx.

Hopfully ive spotted it early enough. As my plott hasnt been used for over ten years

I have had a good look around the complete Alloment this morning and the mare tail is only in one area about a 6 foot area and its only just small shoots.

I am fairly sure the stuff has got in there from a bag of composte that i have put in that area. so fingers crossed

If they are only new to the plot then you will be able to get rid of them :thumb:. I would be inclined to dig a trench a bit of a distance away from them to see whether there are any roots that have spread out. If you come across some then try to follow them and remove them. If none of the roots go deep then you can follow them back to where you can see them growing.

I hope you are going to be lucky and find that even the ones you see growing are not going to be too deep. Remove those and bag everything and take them to the council tip. Keep that area clear of plants for at least a year and keep a sharp eye out for the b*ggers.

With a bit of luck you are going to be able to get rid of them. If it came in with the compost then you should be able to beat it but if it has been there for years then you will have to learn to live with it - like the rest of us :(.

    Good luck :)

I thought that horse´s tail was Equisetum arvense... and Mare´s tail was Hippuris vulgaris... which one are you talking about here?

:eek::eek::eek: Hi Master, it certainly is what you think it is...!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

I use glyphosate mixed with sugar soap, you know the decorators stuff..!!! As this helps to break the surface tension & abraid the leaves to absorb the weed killer... You will need to expect to treat it at least 5 times, but it will get to the roots in the end... I have waged a 30yr battle against the dreaded ground elder & mares tail..!! It just comes back as a manageable couple of plants a year now... (I jump on them with my weed killer mix as soon as I see either of them..!!! Jump on yours now & keep jumping on any you see... The earlier you can spray the better.... I have now accepted that both of these will never leave my garden permanently...!!!!:mad::D

I took this from this site...;);):thumb: I find it very handy & have it in my bookmarks...!!!!:D

Good Luck master you have a job on your hands there.....:D But a controlable one...!!!!:D

It certainly is mares tails. as its in a confined area I would have a really concerted efort to dig up the roots then the same thing for any that subsequently come up.

Weedkiller is slow and you may well end up with it spreding before the weedkiller take efect.

thanks for everyones help i realy appreciate. i hope i can return the favours (any car quiestions please ask away)

first off i picked a few out just thinking they were just weeds comming up. then found a few bigger ones as the top picky says then i found the one one the right in the picky and thought OH #### i know what that is . the time ive managed to spend down the plot today has been digging the booger out . ive sorta worked out the core of were i think the middle is and working out the direction of each root (working the direction of the root looking at were the sprigs are comming up)before digging out, then getting my spade and carfully taking the earth out allong side the track . im going full depth with the spade about 6 to 8 inches away listening as i pull up for any pops (roots braking) then pulling the dug out earth apart to get to the mares roots. the earth that im diging out will not be returned.Im hoping the mares is rooting up high as it is new . if need be i will remove all the soil from the area ile loose a few crops cabbage, rubbarb, tyme, and a few other things all from seed and comming up . but hay ho loosing a few to beet the devil weed , I WILL WIN

if i can explane how i feel the best words i can find " its like having your house broken into"

ive only used two shop purchaced compost's on the plott
now i have to carfful with what i say, or i could be dune for slander, so i will not be biass in any way
the composts i have used dierctly on the plot and in the affected area are

    J. Arthur Bowers ~ multipurpose compost. buy one get one free from Annsells near heathrow 70l bags £2.50
Tesco multipurpuse compost £1 a bag jobbie.
if needed i can do pickys of the bags and i still have recipts

we live and learn ile let you make your own minds up were i think the devil weed has come from

foot note: i will be returning the weed to whome i think it came from .
    yes i can be EVIL[IMG]

just a quick picky to show what im picking out of the mud that im taking out. as described in above post
    [IMG]
the root at the bottom is only about an inch .
as i said im digging them out as best i can . but today just incase the digging does not work ive purchased some Roundup (tree stump & root killer)

the mares tail won todays battle as it has been raining all day (so it thinks) i only dug a few out , but what the mares tail doesn't know is ive got a back up plan. i have G/C on my side backed up with miltary of ROUNDUP .

the above booger has lost a life today. even down to it's base root (and thats how im digging them out )

    the WAR has started.
for scale i did this picky. there only little chaps , it's the little ones you need to watch out for
    [IMG]
if the little boogers dont behave . im going to come out with my second line of defence

We had rats tails as we called them when we lived next to a railway line. Only way to get rid was to pull them up young, making sure to get the whole root. :)

When the plants are very small like that & before the waxy leaves/fronds whatever you want to call them open out...! Good Luck mate..! :thumb:

:D:D Perhaps you could get everyone doing a "Kill the weeds" war dance...!!!!:D:D:D
