    Hi Gardening experts.

I have a 6 foot fence between me and my neighbours, except the last part which is a couple of feet in length but which is only 5 feet high. The fence is my neighbours. We get on fine, but there is absolutely no privacy as every time I look up now there appers to be a face looking in over the 5 foot high bit of fence.

Anyway, I'd like to put something there in a plant kind of way ;) At our old house we had a nice Forsythia that evetually grew quite tall and bushy, (and looked great in spring time), now that would be perfect except you can't seem to buy them that tall!

So can anyone offer any advice on what I can buy, (without breaking the bank), to fill in the gap in the shortest possible time? Any suggestions welcome.

You could put up a trellis on your side of the fence then something quick growing (mile-a-minute perhaps!) on that. You would need to speak to the neighbour first though if attaching it to the fence. This would be a lot cheaper than buying something that is already 5 foot high!

Hi Gazzak and welcome. Try to put something in that isn't going to offend the neighbours. If it is too tall and they don't like it and complain to the local authority then you will probably lose the argument as well as good relationships. I would probably put up some trellising a couple of feet into your property then grow a climber up it. Like most new members you don't actually say where you are in the UK (or even if you are in the UK at all) so it is not possible to suggest the best climbers.

Yeah thought about trellis but as it's their fence it's a no go. I don't want to upset them. Even something just under fence height that would grow high enough for next spring would be fine. It would grow into position!

    Thanks for the welcome Sarraceniac.

We're in North London. The position of the fence in relation the the house / garden mean it's a pain to put anything up other than a plant/shrub/tree. There will be no issue with height as I'm more than happy to keep it under control at the same height as the existing fence. I think planting something is the best way to go to avoid any sort of fall out to be honest. When I said I don't want to break the bank I'd still be quite happy to go to £50ish for the right thing.

I visited the local garden centre at lunchtime and purchased a smallish Forsythia bush anyway as I'm a fan anyway :D (£2.95)

Hi Gazzak and welcome, why not pay a visit to The Palm Centre at Kew, and see what they have available. They will have some nice sized plants. What ever you do, dont go for Mile A Minute.:D

    Hi David,

I didn't realise they sold plants at Kew! If my legs not being pulled then that's a good suggestion for the weekend.

So tell me about this mile a minute
