    Hi
For the past few months on most nights my internet connection has disappeared at about 11.30 -12.30 which is most annoying as I like to have an hour or so on my computer when OH has gone to bed. Also very irritating to be in the middle of something and suddenly no internet.:gaah:

I have a Belkin wifi router. I can switch it off then on and it will connect again but usually for just a few minutes. Does anybody else have this problem?
    Can anybody explain - PLEASE

    72 mbps
    Signal strength excellent
    -Limited or no connectivity

How old is your router, it could be on the blink. My daughter had this problem recently and had to invest in a new one.

I've had it just over 2 years. I will gladly buy a new one if that is the problem.
It seems strange that connectivity disappears about the same time every day.
I am expecting it to disappear as I type

Its not just the router, but everyone in your local area, could be someone is starting an on line game at that time:sad:

you will find that the more people on line in your area the lower your signal goes apparently the are three peak times once in the morning after school run, next one is around 7pm after kids go to bed and people home from work and the next is around midnight when partners go to bed, chances are that a new few Xboxes arrived over christmas and they all go live when OH is in bed

I would check with your service provider. If they are undertaking any 'routine' maintenance, and whilst you're with them, explain the issue to them too.

A router 'should' last more than a couple of years, but anything electrical could suffer from something as silly as a dry joint (no puns Zigs )at any point.

Also, if you haven't renewed your internet with your provider, now could be a good time to look out another contract.

I recently called Virgin (my supplier) as my connection was a 20Meg connection and thought I should have been getting more due to their advertising telling everyone that their speed should be doubled (which it hadn't), turns out mine had already been doubled a year ago as I was one of the early ones, BUT whilst on the phone, I asked them about new deals.

It turns out that I could get a new contract (12 months) at 60Meg with a new Hub (router) and save £5 per month ..... Figure that one out :)

So, before you do anything, I would call your provider and see if you are due to renew/upgrade, as you may not have to pay a bean and get a better connection/service.

    Hope this helps

    Nathan

I had a similar conversion with my broadband supplier plusnet where they said they could upgrade me to their new unlimited plan (from my 60gb limit) and reduce the cost of my broadband...

I assume you leave your router switched on, (some of my clients don't) if you don't then it could be a problem with over heating. Have you changed filters recently?

Your service provider will normally provide you with a new router free of charge and they are better than the rubbish ones of past years. When broadband first came out I would always recommend buy your own but not now.

i always turned my router off at night, until my sister (who is more savvy than me) explained, the exchange sort of prioritises the connections, everytime you turn off it drops you to the bottom of the list ,and the longer you connected the higher you are, something like that anyway.:pcthwack:

I complained to my provider, formerly known as Orange, now EE, and they updated my router on line, as I was really fed up with the connection, considered dropping it , but as it`s 17-50 a month for my land line and broadband, + call charges I cannot see a better deal out there.

Clueless - I am with TalkTalk
and Julie - I switch it off every night when I go to bed. Husband insists
everything possible must be switched off at night for safety reasons!
Is it best to leave it on?

Nathan thankyou for that. I intend to check with TalkTalk when I have an
hour to spare hopefully tomorrow. It's never quick to ring providers is it?
and as they mostly have a very strong Indian accent (well they would in
India I know) I often have difficulty hearing them.

Are there any providers that are based in UK?

I don't know anyone else on TalkTalk so I'm afraid I know nothing specific about them. I know a few people on Virgin who have had the problems you describe.

Definitely worth speaking to them. If its time specific, it is almost certainly one of their processes that is affecting you, rather than a problem with your kit.

Does your contract feature a download limit, and if so, are you likely to be getting close to it? If so, then it may be that they are throttling your connection, but if its the same time every night, that seems unlikely.

Yes routers should be left on at all times otherwise you will not get the fastest signal. Takes 10 days to stabalise.
