    Hello everyone,

Apprentice gardener and a newbie on here! :hapydancsmil: I’ve recently bought a house which has a large south facing lawn.

Unfortunately, the previous owner didn’t keep up with the maintenance and I’ve ended up with grass almost 1.5m high! Since it’s a large garden, I’ve been tackling this in small areas over the last 2 weeks. It’s now 90% complete but as you can see from the pictures, there are brown and straw-like patches scattered around the lawn with a massive patch on the top right corner.

Can this be fixed or is it the case of taking off the top layer and re-turfing?

    Any help will be appreciated

Hi, We had a very similar problem with a semi dead lawn which was also full of weeds.. We used a selective weedkiller on what was left, scarified well once that had done its job (we have a Mantis with scarifying attachment - brilliant back saver). As the lawn area was rather dry - the hot dry summer 2018 had killed it - we watered the area and then thin layer of top soil and rolled it. Rang A1 Lawns and talked to Jono bout the kind of seed we needed which we purchased together with some seed easy start/fertiliser. There is nothing to stop you getting seed from wheresoever you wish though, but the fertiliser really speeded things up. Spread the seed using a spreader, rolled again and watered well. As the weather was still dry, we watered every morning and every evening for a couple of weeks, when we saw the new grass start to come up. eventually we rolled again an once the new growth was about 10cm high, we set the mower on high and just trimmed it. Job done. With the weather being so dry in the summers now, watering the lawn is almost a must. There is a type of seed that dies better in dry conditions though. Good luck! Give it a go.
