I have an open-plan front garden, that abuts directly on to my neighbours driveway. He insists upon parking his van on his drive so that it is about five feet from our front window. Being open-plan I cannot erect a nice six foot high fence.I would like an easily managed evergreen, not too wide, and colourful.
I can only think of some pyracnthas. Any other suggestions, besides moving?

    Best wishes,

    Big daddy

Thank you Liz and Lady gardener.
Trellis I think would be deemed to be fencing, but the idea of bamboo is a good one, my only concern is its reaction to the wind, becasue I cant have it blowing over on to the yellow van.

    Cheers,

    Big daddy

Bamboo is fairly light, sounds a good idea to me. Otherwise you're into the area of hedging varieties like berberis. Beech would make a good screen but would probably be regarded as too fence-like.

A yucca, like the pampas grass. would contribute to a desert scene! Bushes such as Garrya Elliptica and mahonia will give good cover, are evergreen, and have catkins/flowers. [IMG]

My neighbour had exactly the same problem, with the other half of her semi. I helped her put up a short trellis. A 7 foot fencing post attached to the house, and a five foot post six foot from the house. Between the two we put a 4 foot high by 6 foot long trellis, and on top we put one of those curved trellis on its side. Three foot high at the house end and one foot high at the post end. It looked nice.

When covered by climbers you can not see anything of next door from the front room. And next door cannot look in and see you. Because it comes out such a short distance, it is hardly noticeable from the road. She also has shrubs in lieu of a hedge down to the road. But she has got the height close to the house, without the bulk of a 7 foot shrub.

Would you be allowed a bean net? And then grow hops up it. It will need a lot of support, but a thick string from high up on the house to a post at the front of the property would do it. Mind you, in May/June you need to shear it twice a day as the growth is so rampant, specially if you feed it ;)
