    Dear all,

One of our neighbours across the back has the unfortunate habit of leaving a back garden floodlight on 24/7.

Its one of those small HID security lights, meant to be controlled by a motion sensor, but they seem to have one is which on permanently (even during the day).

I dont think its intentional - as sometimes they go for several weeks with it off, and then its back on again. They are maybe just a bit scatty and dont realise they have left it on. (My wife speculates they are underworld figures (!) and this constant lighting shows they live in fear of rivals - I hope she is wrong haha!)

My concern is - will this light being on all the time affect my garden, in terms of the photoperiod for flowering plants and vegetables?

I know light dissipates very quickly with distance and their light is likely not adding much more than the local street lamps, but I just thought Id ask, as I wanted a greenhouse and raised beds in our garden eventually.

I note they have no flowers or vegetables in their own garden - its just a play area for kids / place for adults to sit outdoors (Fair enough, everyones different).

The light is mounted on the back wall of their home and so is not too close to us (a good few meters away anyway).

    Thanks for any advice.

Good afternoon @Gabriel Syme I respectfully suggest that you have a friendly word with them as they probably don't know how to change the timer,.offer to do it for them and that will save them on their electricity bill,I am pretty sure that it won't interfere with your garden,

@wiseowl is right - talk to them first. They probably don't realize what their light is doing. Many towns here have bylaws regarding trespassing which includes light trespassing like the kind you are talking about. No one wants to feel that they are under the spotlight in their own property!

          Speak with them first.

If no response I understand it's now a Statutory Nuisance - Google light nuisance.

It won't directly have any impact at all on your plants. But it might have an effect on any wildlife that frequents your garden.

Some one up the road from me has a massive floodlight set up, its on a pir sensor.

The cats set it off all night, when its on it lights up the back of about a dozen houses opposite to near daylight.
Cant understand why none of them haven't complained or at least got out an air rifle, its a total menace.

But I dont think even that will upset garden plants.

Light won't affect the garden, air rifle will sort light... Or a pleasant word I suppose.
Clue makes a good point on affecting wildlife though
