I have some Wisley Vanilla seeds I collected last year but I don't know if I should surface sow them like petunia seeds or sieve some compost onto them?

Any advice would be great, thankyou.

    I'd do it both ways.
I have some self -seeded nemesia. I assume they just lay on the top of the soil but who knows

They germinate on the surface quite well but it's easier to keep the seeds moist with a little sprinkling of soil. I know this because I had issues with the compost I used this year and found it hard getting used to how wet it stayed. The first sowing was poor so I threw some more seed on top and they did ok but in new compost, just under the surface they did much better (all sowings were with the same seed).
