    Hi all,
guess what - i've installed a router to my main pc today [IMG]
However, while i can now get on the net ok with my laptop, I can't seem to get each computer to recongnise each other.
As anyone who has seen pm posts, you will know that i'm terrible with pc's etc.

i spend more time pressing the back button on the laptop than on the desktop [IMG]

Anyone with any quick ideas how to solve this?

Also do i have to keep the adaptor in the laptop to go online? it doesn't work otherwise at the moment but that maybe cos i'm still missing something (like a brain :D )

    Cheers for any help.

You need to set up a 'network' borrowers to get computers to talk to each other. My eldest set mine up but setting it up is not plug and play. I am not qualified to tall you what to do but I can just sit here and say 'Oh dear, how sad. never mind.'

If your 'adapter' is a network adapter then yes you do need it plugged in to talk to the router. I do at least know that.

To share a file or folder on your network you should right-click on the file/folder and then check the 'Network Sharing and Security' box from the new menu that opens.

    You're right John!!! [IMG]

Borrowers - If on your laptop you click on 'Start' and then on 'My Network Places' you'll see an option to set up a wireless network, If you choose this it should more or less do it for you. It should find your wireless router (I'm assuming it's wireless) and your main PC connected to the router. Sorry I can't be more specific but it's over a year since I last did it.

    Hi all, thanks for replies.

well you'll be amazed to know i have managed to do something [IMG] Just 'something' though.

i can access the net no problem now on my laptop so that's good.

I have managed to share some photos etc from desktop to laptop too. however can you help with something that is probably really simple? Does my main pc have to be on for me to access those shared files? Don't know if it has to be, or if i'm missing something again.

thanks for all your help so far.

    cheers

Yes Borrowers your main PC will have to be on. Also if you have a printer attached to the PC you'll need the PC on if you wish to print from the laptop.
