There's a new book out for allotment owners and here's an extract about it from an article in the Amateur Gardening Magazine:

"Haynes, the book people who taught us how to tinker with cars, have turned their attention to allotments. The Publisher believes that the £21.99p guide will appeal to 100,000 gardeners on waiting lists as it offers advice on securing a plot. The manual takes a look a legal and financial elements of allotments.

There's a focus on allotment politics, and how to complain without losing friends! It also features an A - Z growing guide, as well as monthly advice and is on sale now."

I don't have an allotment so this book will not be on my buying list, however if it was I would think twice before investing nearly £22 in a book.........I'd rather buy some seeds and equipment.!!

No need to be seduced by Haynes.

There are some excellent books available at the price of a packet of seeds: Andy Clevely's Allotment book, - The Vegetable Garden Displayed (RHS), - Vegetable Expert (Dr.Hessayan) and many others.

Of course the best source of information is right here at GC - why go anywhere else ??

I agree with you, Alex, completely. Which is why I'm a bit puzzled as to why, at that price, they would think there's a market for it.:dunno: But at least people know there's a new book out and they can choose whether to buy it or not:biggrin:

I'm thinking allotments are becoming the latest "must have accessory", its likely to be the most talked about subject at dinner parties in the coming year, and it will be just perfect if you can add, "I also have the Haynes manual".

      Absolutely delightful !

May suit the people who have the gear but no idea.
Whilst typing that I have just had a brain wave, how long before there is a section in the outdoor clothing section selling DJ's overpriced digging jackets for the gardener who has everything of cause the would have the right label so other gardeners would know you are a prat fashion conscious.

As already said, I'm surprised "Haynes" are releasing a book when the market is already saturated with books on the subject, especially at that price, and what experience would they have or claim to have to entice people to buy such a book?

Rather than buy that book, it's far better to talk to your plot neighbours, you'll learn much more that way that will actually be better info as it applies to your site's growing conditions.

            Steve...:)

Ah yes Steve, but Haynes know there are millions of non gardening want to be gardeners out there
Non gardening want to be's Do not have a friendly allotment holder or neighbour
Why buy a gardening book from a garden centre, or the RHS when you know a
book provider that has kept your old banger going for years, and recently
How to have and look after a Baby

Having recently purhcased a specific car maintenance manual from them
I am disgusted in the total cheapness and quality of what used to be quality books

Gone is the plastic sealed cover (handy when working with oily fingers) gone is the quality paper, and photographs
Now it is a cheap cardboard cover, and printed on what could be blotting paper
The quality photographs are now very blured possibly taken with a half meg pix phone
then printed on blotting paper, makes it even worse totally useless

That's because they're printed in Asia these days, Jack:snork: The most useful thing to do with it would probably be attaching it to the end of a pole and using it as a spade.

I think that they don't really expect gardenrs/allotment holders to buy it. The market they're aiming at is the 'what shall we get them for a present?' idiots.
