    Hi,

Help needed please. We've just changed from Virgin Media to BT. The new BT router is a Smart Hub 2 and is fully working. The router is located in our front bedroom it being the easiest place to run the cable but I'd like to move the router to our front room; which extension Ethernet cable do I need please.

    Many thanks.

    Kind regards, Colin.

My Daughter bought a Ethernet cable from Amazon, you choose the length required also I believe they are all standard fittings.
I run the cable from the downstairs Hub & BT Box to her bedroom upstairs direct into her PC.

What kind of cable enters the hub?
Not sure about BT but ethernet cables can only be connected to the hub with Virgin you cant actually move the hub, I dont think.

            Hi,

Thanks @john558 & @wiseowl for your replies. :dbgrtmb:

I had a 10m new Ethernet cable but was rather wary of disconnecting the router expecting all kinds of problems when I connected the new longer cable; on the router there are three normal Ethernet sockets but the broadband socket doesn't accept a normal Ethernet cable these are too big and this threw me wondering if the supply Ethernet cable also had these smaller connectors; it's all working except the desktop computer but now it's too dark to be playing around; hopefully I can take my laptop back into the studio and connect my desktop back up tomorrow.

            Many thanks again.

            Kind regards, Colin.

I'm not very technical but had a similar problem. Our router is in my office at one end of our bungalow and the wifi didn't get very far because the walls are quite solid. So I was told to get a TP Powerline link.

All I had to do was plug one link into the wall socket and then the other end of the Ethernet cable on it into the router.

Then get another link (they are normally sold as pairs) and plug it into the socket in the other room and plug that Ethernet cable into the computer.

Even for a technical idiot like me it only took a few minutes.

I've just pulled this explanation from the internet:-

              What is Powerline?
Powerline products turn the electrical wiring of a home into network cables and transmit signals to every room. You can form a Powerline network wherever there are power outlets, eliminating the need for expensive and complicated Ethernet cables.

To form a basic Powerline network, you need at least two Powerline devices, whether wired or wireless ones. Different combinations of Powerline products help create a stable and unified network throughout your house.

This is similar to what I have.

@Retired Have done the same with our router, running 5,10 or 20 mtr is no problem.

To ensure you can get full speed up to 1Gbit then use a RJ45 Cat 6, 6A or 7 patch cable.

We often buy from here , very good service.
