Got a Cannon eos 1000 for Christmas from my lovely wife. Can't wait to give it a go and share tips with you folks. :)

Don't know if it is a newer model, I do know that it is an 'entry level' model.

    You lucky lad Pip.
The 1000D is a great camera, it's a slightly 'stripped down' version of the 450D and an enhanced version of the 400D with a 10.1Mp sensor. It's a very versatile camera, particularly if you use the manual control options and you'll soon be knocking out some great photos with it.

One suggestion - Try shooting in RAW mode rather than in jpeg as it will give you very much greater control over the final image. It takes a little getting used to, but is well worth the effort.
I think you'll have Canon EOS Utility and Cannon DPP (Digital Photo Professional) software supplied with the camera and the latest versions are now v 3.9.2, if you have earlier versions downloading the most recent ones would be worthwhile as there are some small but significant improvements on the the earlier release.

There are two or three Canon DSLR users on GC, so I'm sure that if you have any queries you'll have them answered pretty quickly.

    Happy snapping!

Some great feedback from you folks along with some great links, I have noticed the lens has an image stabiliser facility. The added bonus with this camera is that I have a 70-210 lens from an old 135 which is compatible.
