New Computer=New Questions ?

@fat controller and other computer wizz's
I need to change my trusty Dell PC to one that can efficiently run Windows 10 ( seems like all the W10 furore has died down ! )
I have found this Lenovo , with an i5 processor and 128gb solid state drive . More than big enough for my needs.
Now please bear with me as I am 10 years out of date , but it shows this
"Advanced wireless with enhanced antenna design,"
Does this mean the actual PC now transmits data by WiFi independently of my router ?
Also when I plug my router Ethernet cable into the PC will it connect to the internet without downloading haf a dozen drivers as I had to do for the Dell ?

Sorry I can't help but I need a new desktop pc too.

My laptop is slowly dying a painful death, it's constantly plugged in as the battery doesn't hold any power but now it keeps switching off totally, every so often with no warning! Really frustrating. I'm useless with tech these days though.. and having worked for Currys I don't trust anyone there!

 

The screws keep dropping out of my laptop. It then said 'no bootable device' and wouldn't start. I took it apart (easily with no screws left in it ), and the screw had come loose out of the hard drive connector. I need some threadlock me thinks. All works fine now, apart from certain keys on certain days (dirt?)

 

got myself a new laptop. it is a HP. like Wow, I know it can do so much stuff. will go to a geek class, or see if You tube shows something, but until then, will delight in discovering.

 

Might just give that a go and see what happens! Will save me a few quid I suppose, thanks

 

We use Lenovo at work as well . In fact we have a special link to the Lenovo store on the company website for items at "special price ! " It's just that most items are more expensive than Argos or Curry's I'll check tomorrow when I am back in work.

 

Thank you very much, I didn't think about the underneath of the "giblets" as I call them.. haven't cleaned it out yet I am still weighing up whether I need a new one tbh, it's a toshiba satellite pro bought second hand a few years back, the screen is cracked and its missing a few keys thanks to the kiddies and its set up as a desktop with a small screen, wireless keyboard and mouse.. literally just looked at the specs on it, Intel celeron 1.6 ghz with 2g Ram.. with games and the internet being so much more powerful these days I think it would be worth getting a new one (I'd prefer a desktop) rather than taking it apart and adding new bits on it but again cheers. Ebay for the heatsink paste?

 

Sometimes a computer's best friend is the simple vacuum cleaner. They fill up with dust, then can't cool properly, then the built in safeguards in modern chip sets starting down clocking (reducing computing power) to prevent a meltdown. Sometimes simply sticking the hoover pipe against the cooling vents is enough to clear said dust and rejuvenate the computer.

 

Yeah that's just it, I don't fancy adding on bits to a pretty much obsolete/decrepit laptop

 

I think I got my heatsink paste from Maplin when I repaired the lads X-Box. Probably more expensive there though, but quicker.

 

Fitted my new Lenovo PC with W10 this weekend. Did not take to long , everything booted up very quickly first time . I could even load my MS Office 2007 , Excel , Outlook and word with no problems. My car is now full of old PC bits ( hard drive removed ) and cardboard boxes to take to the dump. So hopefully I am OK for the next 10 years
