New Eucalyptus Leaves Dying

Hello Gardeners!

I wonder if anyone could help with my problem.
My potted Eucalyptus is growing new leaves, but almost as soon as they start growing they begin to die.

Some context:
I got the tree about 9 months ago. I brought it indoors for the winter a couple of months ago as it was getting battered by the wind outside. Around that time I trimmed it back as it had a lot of old and dried out branches. It's sat in front of a big east-facing window in a centrally heated room that is kept fairly cool. It gets a little bit of sun in the mornings. I've been watering it at least twice a week as the soil has been drying out quite rapidly, and misting it just as often.
Since trimming it back, it has begun to grow a lot of new leaves and branches, but almost as soon as they start growing they begin to dry out completely and shrivel up.

I wonder if anyone might be able to suggest what I can do about this? Thanks!

 

Hello Jules W, welcome to GC! Eucalyptus really aren't indoor plants. They're hungry, thirsty trees that (mostly) grow in strong sunlight, so I think yours is unhappy about being indoors. You don't say whereabouts you are, but if it's not excessively cold, I'd pot it on and put it in a sheltered spot outside, then plant it in the ground in spring.

 

Hello, thanks for your reply! I'm in London, UK so it's not too cold. My outdoor space (a 1st floor balcony) was very windy in December, hence I moved it inside, but the wind is much better now. Your advice sounds like a good idea, I will move it outside and see how things progress.

Your Eucalyptus looks like E. Gunni , a fast growing large evergreen tree. If you have plenty of room in your garden they make lovely trees. They can be hard pruned in spring to contain growth and produce the attractive juvenile leaves.
