Have just ordered 2 concorde pear and 2 opal plum trees from garden bargains. Will see what they look like on arrival.

Just trying to source a reasonably priced apricot 'goldcot' now...

Had a quick look on their website, they are certainly cheap! How much was delivery though? Also it didn't mention what rootstock they were on.

Was hoping you'd drop by and see this John. It says 'free delivery on all orders over £50' but mine came to 30 and was still free. I think it's a glitch. I added both trees then changed the order for 2 each so the sub total was 59.96, they then automatically applied the discount and never added p&p :)

Just wish they'd had the apricot tree I want!

Root stock is something dwarfing. It's not mentioned but that was as close to a reference as I could find. Still, 4 trees for 30 quid delivered, that's not bad at all.

Certainly will be adding pics :dbgrtmb: are you planting yours in containers or into the ground?

Definitely in the ground, I can't be doing with all the feeding and watering requirements of trees in a pot!

Have also just ordered a new apricot tree from garden best buys. Seems expensive in comparison lol

Right after jwk's post asking about root stock that got me thinking. When I bought my trees I didn't really no a lot about rootstocks and grafting so I bought the trees as on the web site it said dwarfing root stock and suitable for containers (which mine are in as my garden is paved) I have been emailing and ringing customer services for 2 days now and this is the info I have been given
        Cherry is on colt
        Apple is on m9
Pear and plumb are on a semi dwarf root stock possibly g5
I'm going to read up on these because I'm now worried they won't be suitable for containers if this is the case have I got a case for a refund? As they were mismarketed as suitable for containers.

        Looking at this page:
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=359 suggests your Apple is OK on M9 but the others don't sound right for containers.
Colt (for Cherry) is listed as being semi-vigorous up to 6m!

I've just been looking at that JWK and going by that I wouldn't really call 6m suitable for containers would you. The g5 rootstock can also grow to 4m so again quite big for a container

Hmm. Well if they actually grew that large then no, not suitable at all for a container but the container will restrict the growth and vigor so wouldn't worry overly.
They could definitely do with further information though, no question. If you feel that you need a refund then it's always worth asking - you may get a refund and told to keep the trees!

I saw Aldis were selling bare root fruit trees for £3.99 last night (Aldi in Blackwater), they had quite a few apple and pear varieties. It didn't say what rootstock they were on. All around 5 ft tall. Quite a bargain really, I was tempted but don't have enough room.

Don't tell me things like that lol! There's always room for one more...

Anyway, trees are now in the ground and we'll see what happens next.

I think it's very irresponsible of sellers not to include rootstock info and it makes me very annoyed. Many a time I've come across a 'bargain' only to be disappointed by this. Half of the fruit trees in our local garden centre were missing rootstock info, with the centre unable to even track the details down from their suppliers. Perhaps with the resurgence of popularity in grow your own, the numbers of customers demanding this info will put pressure on sellers to properly label their wares.

It's a wonder to most people I think. It's one piece of rudimentary information that has a massive impact on your selection.
