woodland garden under the trees lots of bark chippings, hosta's and astilbe's but they really need damp soil, this would be your best bet for covering a large area but still having something nice to look on, why not plant some bulbs in and amongst the trees aconites snowdrops daffs and hyacinths all add welcomed colour at this time of the year, are you wanting a productive garden if so why not a minature orchard?

Once you have a basic idea of what you would like to see in your garden You have to decide where to put them for best effect. If you wish to grow some veg, a greenhouse, fruit trees, lawn, sitting ares, and so on. I have in the past planted something only to find it has out grown it's position and moved it to somewhere else. Don't be afraid to make a few mistakes. Good luck.

The most important thing is to decide what you want from the garden as a family for the next few years (your kids will not always be small) - browse the gardening books in your local garden centre for gardens you like and that fit. Then plan it out on a piece of paper - then you can tackle it bit by bit as time and money allows-the most important bit first.

Ideas, patio to sit and enjoy the sun, grass for the kids to play on (or sandy area), borders/beds for colour and year round interest, shady chill out area. Small trees and small shrubs to give some height - and shade. Don't forget water - either a tiny pond, or some such

If you haven't the time for a veggie garden, then you and the kids can always grow some in containers as a start
