Hi everyone hope your all well
Today I planted a new mixed UK native wildlife hedge (bare root whips) predominantly Hawthorns.
I done a bit of research and some say plant and then cut down to 50mm above ground.
    Should I be doing this?
Also the hedge includes Field Maple, Hazel, Blackthorn, Dog rose and Bird cherry. If it’s the correct thing to do, should I be doing it to all of the above?
    Thanks for any help
    Steve :)

Seem a bit to low 50mm . Depends how how big the whips are but I'd look more around 20cm give or take and do it to all of them.

    Thanx for your reply
That’s what I thought, they are between 400mm to 600mm

Have planted hedges for conservation campaigns and never trimmed for height at planting. Remember to cut out any competetive vegetation, and maintain and water until established.Protect with tree guards or netting from rabbits and deer.

To get a nice thick hedge, i would leave them to grow for a few years then layer them and then in a few years you will have a nice strong hedge

I agree with all ,,, just leave alone for now .. just make sure you give them a regular watering this year if it hasn't rained for a week lol silly me as if it doesn't rain for a week here.

the only problem with whips they tend to just grow on the top couple of inches .. I do have a native hedge I planted just like you.... I left alone and never trimmed for three years then I reduced it all to 12 inches high (November) it looked dramatic at the time but the following spring all became multi branched and from the base ...
