New job , at last.

Hi all

I have been trying to get a job with my local rail network for over 12 months and I have finally succeeded :D

The job is totally different to the job I currently do and it is less money per year but with it being less hours it actually works out at a higher hourly rate.

You may wonder why I have taken a job with lower pay,well,job satisfaction and being able to work in an environment that I would thoroughly enjoy being in is the reason.

After the interview and tests I was heading home and I picked up a copy of the Manchester Evening News to read on the train, this is what my stars said for that day:

A financial plan you`ve been working on is ready. This may have to do with a promotion or an offer of a new and more rewarding job.

I have never had a prediction ring so true, Russell Grant should be knighted :D

I have kept a copy of that paper for three weeks just so as not to tempt fate , a little sad maybe but we all clutch onto things like that when we want something.

The dream is alive and well and believe it or not this is all part of it. Getting a foothold in an industry that has fantastic opportunities for progression and movement coupled with good wages is fantastic, not to mention that I would also enjoy any aspect of rail work, must be the trainspotter in me.

I have made Mrs Pip a promise that we will be on our way in five years, a promise that she now thinks will be out of the window because of my new job :D :D

Ramsbottom, home of real ale pubs and one of the stops on the East Lancs Railway, which runs from Bury through Ramsbottom to Rawtenstall. It really is a captivating village, with odd-bod antique and brick-a-brack shops and some fascinating architecture - note the central Methodist church and hall. Move up to the Peel Tower for some of the best views down onto Ramsbottom and across to the Rossendale countryside. Another obelisk, but well worth the hike up for the views!

Ramsbottom Village
Not another tower, oh yes and this one was dedicated to Sir Robert Peel of the area who was Prime Minister from 1841 to 1846. Sir Peel founded the modern police force, so we've got him to thank for that! The police were once nicknamed peelers, and the more familiar 'Bobbys' is derived from the founder's name also! For an easier walk up to Peel Tower park up at the quaint little Holcombe Village, grab your pub lunch at the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Holcombe, dating from 1751, then stroll up the short and pleasant walk up to the tower for stunning views.

The village of Ramsbottom is crammed with pubs and speciality shops, and is one of the stops on the East Lancs Railway - so you can hop off the steam train then back on again. There's some very interesting architecture and sculptures in the town including the Wesleyan Chapel, plus the Tilted Vase by Edward Allington. This waterfall vase forms part of the Irwell Valley Sculpture trail which runs from Salford through the Irwell Valley and on as far as Bacup.

Bury and Bury Market
Plenty to do in Bury. Start at Burrs country Park, a historic mill site connected to the Peel family then move into the centre of Bury to pay a visit to the bury Art Gallery and Museum. Here exhibits such as the Co-op store tell the stories of Bury residents of old! And the art gallery contains paintings by Constable and Lowry. Also in Bury is the Lancashire Fusiliers Museum - a regiment founded in 1688. Bury had it's own castle once, and the remains are still visible in Castle Square.

Check out the famous Bury Market, given a charter in 1440 and famous for it's Black Puddings (if that's what floats your boat!). This really is an enormous market and one of the best.

East Lancs Railway
The East Lancs Steam Railway was opened in 1846, to link Manchester with the Bolton line. It was a very popular line, which was rescued and preserved by the East Lancashire Preservation Society (there's some pretty dedicated volunteers out there who have saved steam railway routes across the country!).

Check out their website below for the history of the line, plus listings of special events such as 'Thomas the Tank Engine' days, Santa Specials and 1940s Wartime Weekends! You can even hire a train for a special event!

Visit also 'The Trackside', at Bury Bolton Street Station - where on platform two real ales are on the menu from all over the UK and the Isle of Man, together with a variety of hot food.
