New lens - First shots

I got a new zoom 70-300 lens last week and today was its first brief outing.
It'll take me ages to find out what the optimum settings are, but I'm reasonably pleased with these first attempts.

 

Dave - they are really good - it seems almost possible to touch them.
You should be extremely pleased with your first attempt. Look forward to seeing more.

It's a Canon 60D. I had a Canon 70-300 lens but have just upgraded it to a 70-300 L series lens and going by first results it does seem to be significantly better. My son has my old Canon 450D and is very keen on wildlife photography so he's inherited the 'old' lens.

Only "reasonably"? Well, I think they're stunning shots, so there! :D

 

I have a 75/300 (non L series, non IS too for that matter ) but I very rarely use it as I find it quite a soft lens overall in use. It's even soft when rock steady on a tripod using mirror lock!

So now I just use my 28/135IS instead and walk a bit closer, and that's why I dont do wildlife shots...lol

Nice crisp shots Dave, I'm sure it's just a matter of time and oppurtunity for you to better those posted here.

The moon looked good tonight so I thought I try a shot and faffed about for ages trying to get the exposure and focus right. Didn't quite manage as well as I'd hoped and gave up eventually and it was too blooming cold.
This one's been tweaked a little
