Perhaps this might be a good idea. Rather than automatic membership being given by the forum as soon as you register, each new request should be vetted by the power that be. On the poultry forum I belong to, this is the process. It vets each application, thereby avoiding spammers or banned members trying to return.

Just a thought - don't know if the software here would allow it though?

I'm sure there are enough 'genuine' members to hi-light a spammer or such like, and you can generally guess from the heading and user name that they are likely to be a none genuine member, and therefore don't have to look.

Very true, but as this forum is entirely open to non members to view, seeing inappropriate posts doesn't give the forum the best of reputations in the big world wide web!

Once a report is filed by one member, anyone else trying to do the same gets the message you did.

Just to assure you that that particular 'member' was banned within ten minutes of the reported post.
Thank you for reporting it Hmallet...and thanks to others too:gnthb::gnthb:

Great to see you are all on the watch when we are 'away':)

I seem to remember when I joined I had to wait for manual verification, but the forum was running different software back then.

I think its a case of swings and roundabouts to be honest. Manual verification isn't foolproof. A bad person could be all nice while wait to be verified, just to be silly once approved. Of course there are those nasty automated ones that just pummel every forum until they get in, they'd be stopped by manual verification, but I believe the forum software has some sort of block list for known bad IP addresses or something.

I guess what I'm saying is that no matter what strategy you adopt, some will always still get through. When that happens its up to whoever spots it first to report it I guess.

Perhaps an unpopular concept, but the poultry forum I belong to also has a policy of only allowing members to register if they have an IP email address, ie, no free email addresses such as yahoo, hotmail, etc, etc. This seems to work rather well at keeping the spammers out as well. There haven't been any problems there now for over 2 years and it has a membership of 5000+

That would rule me out. I've been stuck with Hotmail ever since Sky (my ISP) made some changes to their mail server, broke it, and never got round to fixing it.

Are spammers or banned members really a problem? I hadn't noticed. I think it's fine as it is.

Just a suggestion. I'm not a moderator (thank god!) so therefore I don't have to deal with the spammers or the stuff they seem to enjoy posting.

Seen it happen 3/4 times so far...I've been a member here for a year.
